As many of you know, animals have always held a special place in my heart. My journey with animal rescue began with Amicii Dog Rescue, a charity dedicated to saving dogs in Romania.
After losing our beloved Golden Retriever, Rusty, at the grand age of 14, we said we wouldn’t get another big dog. The loss was heart-wrenching, as it always is, and we didn’t feel ready for a new addition. But as the years passed, there was a noticeable void in our lives (plus Roley, my Chihuahua, missed snuggling with his big friend). Then we spotted Flynn on Amicii’s Facebook page - a little puppy found in the mountains with his brothers, but sadly without their mum. His adorable face captured our hearts, and we knew instantly that he was meant to be part of our family.
Feeling grateful, I wanted to give something back to the charity that brought Flynn into our lives. The opportunity arose for me to volunteer in Romania, where Flynn had come from, and see first-hand the incredible work Amicii does. During my time there, I saw how much love and care goes into rescuing dogs, rehabilitating them, and preparing them for new homes. I helped with everything from walking the dogs to cleaning kennels, feeding them, and assisting vets as they prepared dogs for travel to the UK. I also met some incredible people who are passionate about animal welfare and I raised over £1500 in donations during my time there.
When I returned home, I was determined to do more. I began organising fundraising events through my part-time job at Pets and Friends, in Littleover. I wanted to make the most of my time, so I ran raffles, competitions, and even hosted a ‘Dogs and Doughnuts’ event with Project Doughnut to draw people in. We’ve done Christmas ‘Donate a Dinner’ campaigns, and it’s been heart-warming to meet customers who, like me, have adopted dogs through Amicii.
However, after three rewarding years supporting Amicii, I’ve decided to shift my charity focus to the RSPCA in Burton. This decision feels right as many of my clients’ pets are rescues from the RSPCA, and I’m excited to support a cause that is so close to the local community. Giving back to the RSPCA is personal to me too, as my first cats, Pepsi and Cola, were adopted from there.
To kick off this new chapter, I’m thrilled to announce that we’re hosting a Christmas fundraiser at Pets and Friends in Littleover to support pets in need. Whether it’s food, toys, or other essentials, every donation will help animals still waiting for their forever homes. If you cant get into store, why not gift something from their amazon wish list.
I’m looking forward to this next step in giving back and continuing to support the amazing animals that bring so much joy to our lives.
Until next time, happy pet parenting!
Holly
